- About Jungnang
- Greetings
- Designation :
- Bonghwasan Mountain
- Location :
- San 46-1 Muk-dong
- Area :
- 1,031,682㎡
- Facilities and Features :
- In spite of the low altitude, the mountain commands a fine view and offers a great mountain-climbing experience to everybody. The mountain had a few beacon mounds in the Joseon period.
At 160.1 meters high, Bonghwasan is an independent mountain surrounded by flatland; it lies within the boundaries of Sangbong-dong, Junghwa-dong, Muk-dong, and Sinnae-dong.
With the exception of Achasan on the east, Bonghwasan offers great views of its surrounding areas. From here you can see Buramsan Mountain, Dobongsan Mountain, and Yangju area to the north. Moreover, since there are no tall mountains to the east and south, it offers a great view of Namsan Mountains well as the southern regions. Another name for the mountain was “Bongujae”; on January 1, 1963, however, it went from being part of Gyeonggi-do Province to being incorporated into the Seoul Metropolitan area. From its name, one can tell that it has an affiliation with the Bonghwa region; from the northern Hanisan Mountain it now has the beacon tower of Achasan Bongsudae, which was remodeled on November 7, 1994.
The entire area of Muk-dong San 46-1 is the officially designated neighborhood park, “Bonghwa Park,” which features five 5km walking trails. Pine trees are plentiful here; at the foot of the mountain are many Meokgol Pear trees that are slowly beginning to spread to neighboring areas. Slightly to the south on one side of the mountain’s summit is Sasingak Shrine, where shamanistic rituals were carried out about four hundred years ago.
Sasingak Shrine today is a brick red and cement restoration of the original after it was destroyed in a fire in the summer of 1992.
