Villagers’ exorcism at Bonghwasan Mountain was designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 34 in January 2005 by Seoul City. Having served as a rite that strengthens the brotherhood and friendship between villagers for more than 400 years, the rite is held on March 3 of the lunar calendar at a shrine at the summit of Bonhwsan.
Each neighboring village (i.e., Junghwa-dong, Sangbong-dong, and Sinnae-dong) used to host the right alternately. Recently, the duty of hosting the rite was taken over by the Bonghwasan Dodang Rite Preservation Committee of the Jungrang Culture Center.
On the eve of the rite, preparations are made. On the day of the rite, offerings are presented at the altar and the shrine. Exorcists then start a rite of purifying the place. The rite is started in the morning, lasting until late afternoon.
